Cha Cha Real Smooth | Review

Cha Cha Real Smooth is a delightful film about finding yourself through love & family. A brilliantly written and directed modern rom-com from Cooper Raiff that accurately depicts and challenges the idea of soul-mates & commitment.

It isn’t often that I watch a film and find myself as thrilled, entertained, and inspired as I found myself here. This one is an absolute wonder– every element working in harmony to deliver a perfect film. That’s a claim I do not make lightly. Is it possible that I am simply a prisoner of the moment? Absolutely, but as of today Cha Cha Real Smooth, my dear, I see no flaw in you… except for your title, but we’ll get to that.

The performances are breathtaking, a fact that is all the more impressive considering that our lead is also writing & directing. Cooper Raiff oozes charm in a way that, I’m sure, makes so many guys go “What does he have that I don’t!?” He’s got confidence to spare and incredible head-turning dialogue. I dare not forget Dakota Johnson who gives us her most hypnotizing performance yet. I have no doubt that, regardless of your gender or sexual orientation, you will find yourself completely enamored by her.

The writing is exceptional and, of course, contributes to the strength of all of the other elements. I am a true believer of the fact that the script is king, something Raiff took to heart because this is storytelling at its best. A strong narrative, genuine & clever dialogue, authentic characters with agency, and twists– character & plot– that surprise and delight.

I cannot speak any more highly of this film. Much like CODA last year, this is THE film worth watching and discussing. Back to my only issue: the title of this film should have absolutely been Cupid Shuffle. Not only is it a better song but it also just makes so much more sense narratively. Regardless, this is a must watch!
